| Discovering
Ubin With Uncle Joe ! : ) |
|
If
you love the countryside, Pulau Ubin is the place for you! It's our
Island Paradise!
|
Let
Uncle Joe share with you his love for Pulau Ubin.
You will get to visit a typical kampong house,
learn some aspects of Malay culture, soak in the beautiful sceneries,
study the mangrove and the wildlife, explore the tidal pools along
the seashore, and recognise fruit trees such as the durian
and the breadfruit (sukun).
Uncle Joe also has a treasury of local knowledge which are fast-disappearing.
For example, would you like to know how to choose a site to dig a
well, how to crack a giant granite rock with a tiny hammer, or how
to make fascinating kampong toys? I am sure you would be eager to
learn!
Once you have taken a grand tour of Pulau Ubin with Uncle Joe, you
will readily agree with him that it is extremely important for us
(Singaporeans) to |
 |
conserve the island
as it is. You will certainly make Ubin's rare Olive
Tree Skink,
Oriental Pied Hornbill and other wildlife extremely happy!
SO... remember to
bring along your sketch book and camera. There are so many delightful things
which you can draw, paint or record!
Lastly, one other thing you should know about Uncle Joe is: he is waiting
eagerly for the new boardwalk at Chek Jawa to
be opened. Then everyone can go to Chek Jawa anytime! Nobody is as excited
as Uncle Joe because he and his friends had worked very hard to save
Chek Jawa from reclamation in 2001. He relishes telling intimate
stories about the marine world of Chek Jawa
that he loves so much!
Hey... do you know there is a song and an environmental
film about Chek Jawa ?!
See you soon! The bumboats are
waiting for you! : ) |
