Flowers of Streblus elongatus (Family: Moraceae)

The minute male and female flowers of the tempinis tree (Streblus elongatus) are arranged in pendulous spikes or catkins (photo below). The generic name, Streblus (meaning crooked in Greek), and the specific epithet, elongatus (meaning elongated or lengthened), describes to the catkins of flowers.

There is a rare climber on Pulau Ubin, Trophis scandens, that is related to the tempinis tree. However, the Moraceae Family is better known for its fabulous figs. Also see Fig Facts.
