There
are three naturally occuring species of pitcher plants found in Singapore
-- namely, Nepenthes gracilis (photo right), Nepenthes
ampullaria, and Nepenthes rafflesiana.
Like orchids, pitcher plants are found to be quite disposed to natural
hybridation, i.e. crossing amongst themselves quite freely. Nepenthes
hookeriana and Nepenthes trichocarpa
are amongst the three natural hybrids recorded so far locally.
About 80 species of pitcher plants have been discovered worldwide
and probably an equal number are found to be natural hybrids. Cultivars
(man-made hybrids), on the other hand, may run into the hundreds to
meet the demand of plant hobbyists enthralled by their novel pitchers
and carnivorous nature. |
