| The
black-and-white rendition (right) is a reproduction of a water colour
painting by an unknown artist (circa 1845) depicting the layar-rock
called Lot's Wife. Bukit Bendera (now Mount Faber) and its flagstaff
are painted as the backdrop. A fishing sailboat is idly returning
to the glassy water of Chermin Bay. Bukit Chermin's reflection brings
out the light in the painting so eloquently. |

A much earlier name
for Bukit Bendera was Telok Blangah Hill, the seat of power of the Temenggong
in the early history of Temasek. It was unilaterally changed in 1845 by
the British colonial masters much to the annoyance of the locals. |
