| It
is a badge of honour I have kept with affection. My alma mater
had been Tanjong
Katong Technical Secondary School and it held Da Vinci as its
inspiration. I am fondly reminded of my teachers whenever I look at
my badge. |
Da
Vinci was a polymath in all sense of the word. Learned (almah,
in Arabic) in the arts and sciences, he put his thinking cap and creative
hands into investigative experiments. His self-acquired and hands-on
knowledge of human and animal anatomy, as well as geometry and mechanics,
came in handy when designing and constructing his
bird-inspired flying machine.
Dexteritas is a virtue many forgets. Book-orientated and beseiged,

buried in books with
little time for self-exploring and intepretation
in the real world. Da Vinci's hands-on approach
to his accomplishments should remind us that Dexteritas is the nurturing
mother (mater, in Latin; meter, in Greek) of Diligentia
and Ingenium.
In our harsh and hurried modern world, there will be many hidden Da Vincis'
left in the lurch for economic survival. The good news is that, increasingly,
schools in Singapore are trying their very best to provide the holistic
development of the child. However, parents still remain the only foundation
of hope that truly provides the all-important support system that gives
their children the space and freedom to be at their
very natural best. |
