Christmas
Island - Kingdom of the Crabs
with Joseph Lai
Christmas Island, the tip of an ancient volcano sited
360km south of Java, is an oceanic island which has evolved flora
and fauna very unique to it. Ringed by pinnacles and honeycombed by
caves, Christmas Island rises to a forested plateau of 360 metres.
It is a remote location and currently, chartered flights only operate
weekly from Bali by Austasia and Garuda. |

Though
it is not the season for the famous annual crab migration
which begins with the year-end rain only, you
will still encounter hundreds on the forest trails, plus the sight
of endemic and rare seabirds. Christmas Island also offers world-class
diving and snorkelling. Turtles come to breed on its beaches, while
dolphins and whale sharks may be seen off-shore.
Highlights include visits to the Blowholes and Hugh's Waterfall. Take
advantage of this rare opportunity to see the Galapagos of the
East ! Also, with your participation, you will be helping to boost
much-needed eco-tourism on this island which is otherwise threatened
with destructive industries such as phosphate mining. The
estimated cost per person is at an off-season low of S$1788.
