"Happy
the cicadas' lives,
for they have voiceless wives."
-- Greek dramatist Xenarchus (400BC)
|
"What
a chauvinist pig!"
-- I can almost hear the ladyfolks murmuring now : )
Well, Aristotle was no less subtle when he proposed that unhappy husbands
made natural philosophers. [ha ha !]
In ancient times, classes were often held in olive groves where cicadas
abound. It was likely that Xenarchus drew inspiration from cicadas
while teaching there.
It is true, of course, that female cicadas do not make noise. Males
do -- not with their mouth -- but with their bum or abdomen.

[ok... I can hear the
ladyfolks sneaking in a "ya, bums they certainly are! They don't
deserve us!"... ha ha!]
Indeed, husbands can be a real pain (at times), but they are lovable do-without
too. It is to no discredit thus to know how female cicadas get all flushed
and excited when the males drum up their bums -- sometimes in unison.
[A neat trick, eh, guys? : )]
Such is the wonder of nature and love! Happy Valentine!
Here's my special valentine treat for all you earth-worms and fristos
out there:
Cicada's sucking mouthpart (the rostrum) and
its powerful '8-pack' muscles found on the head
-- required for sucking up juice from the tree's deep-seated xylem.
Footnote: Marriage is an INSTITUTION ! hee
hee... : )
