| Burmannia
coelestis (Family: Burmanniaceae) |
|
They blossom
towards the heavens, reflecting its sky-blue colour
(coelestis - in Latin) in an estatic display. For life is just
too short
for this annual herb. It would not be long before its three-merous
flowers wither brown and be carried off by the wind - roll, tumble
and disintegrate - to rest its tiny seeds on some good earth and await
the next season of growth.
The floral arrangement, of 3 tepals in two ranks in Burmanniaceae,
is considered by some to be closely allied to some families, such
as
Amaryllidaceae, in Liliflorae. Blue is also the most uncommon colour
exhibited in the plant kingdom. |
