The Bird's Monologue other poems by Lu Li

1
"O birdcatcher,
Please excuse me,
You dwell in your mansion, I rest in my hedge,
Why is it your pleasure
To lay a net for me
To grab me in your black hand
And thrust me into your jail?"

2
"O birdcatcher,
I confess to you,
Since you crave a world of silence
And a slaugtherhouse of mangled flesh and blood,
It is my misfortune to have a feathered body
And a singing voice."

3
I pledge my life:
I would not change my nest in the wilderness
For a palace glittering with gold and jade,
Or change the green woods and blue sky
For a golden chain."
