A Giant Reminder of Apocynaceae
The great Pulai tree (Alstonia angustiloba) is the one you will see on approaching Pulau Ubin Jetty (pictured below - rising above the canopy of an abandoned rubber plantation). She is actually standing in an old kampong (village) area called Kampong Malayu.

The villagers have been resettled on the mainland and the quaint kampong houses demolished. There is a malay grave at the foot of this tree. If you visit the Pulai tree, please be mindful of this resting place.

She had been designated as a Heritage Tree recently. For many an Ubin-fan, it is a hope well-cherished and reflected most eloquently at the break of dawn.
