Rise in number of pedestrian deaths
In
the first nine months of this year, 94 pedestrians were killed on
the road. This is nearly three times the 35 road deaths recorded in
the same period last year. According to the Traffic Police, most victims
were aged 60 years and older, which has been the case in the past
too. This year, they accounted for one-third of those killed on the
road.
Heightened public education programmes have brought down the number
of pedestrians killed or injured at proper crossings, but the number
who are is still significant. In the first nine months, there were
83 such accidents, three of them fatal. In the same period last year,
there were 197, and seven were fatal. The majority of those hurt sustained
minor injuries. |
